MIDLAND, Texas – Heavy rains forced long delays for the Wichita State men's tennis team Friday at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.
Action in the top flight of men's singles extended well past dark, as tournament officials pushed to complete the first round.
Tomislav Gregurovic won WSU's first match of the new season, besting Max Lukin of Texas A&M in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) to move into the second round.
Teammate Tin Ostojic will join him in the final 16. Ostojic –No. 109 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason Division I rankings – earned the top seed in the 30-player singles draw. His reward was a first round bye.
Guillermo de Vilchez fell to Texas-Arlington's Jonathan Gonzalez (6-2, 6-0), while his brother, Sergio de Vilchez was bested by the No. 4 seed Trevor Johnson (6-0, 6-3).
First round matches were postponed for two other Shockers, Miroslav Herzan and Jocelyn Devilliers. Both who were scheduled to take part in the second flight of men's singles.
Singles play is expected to resume at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
WSU also has three teams entered in the doubles draw. The combo of Ostojic and Gregurovic received a first-round bye as one of the top seeds. Herzan and Devilliers will team up, as will the de Vilchez brothers.
The tournament is scheduled to wrap up Sunday.
