WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team used seven runs in the third inning to defeat North Dakota, 16-1 in five innings on the second day of the Shocker Softball Classic Fri., March 7 at Wilkins Stadium.
North Dakota scored on a SAC fly in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead but Wichita State responded in the bottom of the inning with a 3 RBI home run by Paige Mason to put the Shockers up, 3-1. Melanie Jaegers hit a RBI double to center field to score a runner before Ali Vandever hit a RBI single to right center to score Jaegers and extend the Wichita State lead, 5-1.
The Shockers loaded the bases in the bottom of the second before Paige Luellen hit a grand slam over center field to give Wichita State a 9-1 advantage.
North Dakota put runners on the corners in the third with one out but Jaegers threw out the runner at second before Kelli Spring threw it back to Jaegers to complete the double play to get Wichita State out of the inning.
The Shockers scored seven runs in the bottom of the third, capped by a two RBI double by Layne Greenlee to extend the Wichita State lead, 16-1.
Katie Malone (6-1) picked up the win for the Shockers allowing just four hits and one run in three innings in the victory. Vandever hit a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, while Mason hit 2-for-3 for the game.
Wichita State will wrap up the Shocker Softball Classic Sun., March 9, with a game against Iowa State at 3 p.m. with a game against Northern Illinois immediately following at 5:30 p.m.
