OMAHA, Neb. – The Wichita State softball team came within one of Creighton but couldn't get the bats going as the Bluejays defeated the Shockers, 2-1, Wed., March 19 at the CU Sports Complex.

A home run to right field gave Creighton an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Bluejays continued to be a force at the plate, hitting another home run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Liz Broyles drew a walk and Paige Luellen hit a single up the middle to start the fourth inning before Brittany Fortner reached on a fielder's choice, advancing the runners on an error by the shortstop to load the bases for the Shockers. A pitch hit Ali Vandever shortly after, bringing in Broyles and cutting the Creighton lead, 1-2.

The Creighton defense stepped up in the final innings, keeping Wichita State from scoring and the Bluejays went on to win, 2-1.

Luellen hit 2-for-3 on the day, increasing her overall batting average to .395 on the season, while Spring hit .333 (1-for-3), bringing her average to .298.

Sloan Anderson took the loss for the Shockers, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out seven in six innings.

Due to the cold weather expected on Sun., March 23, Wichita State will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to take on the Indiana State Sycamores Fri. March 21 at 2 p.m. (CT) before finishing the series Sat., March 22 with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. (CT).
