Melanie Jaegers was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week and
Cacy Williams was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced today.
A junior catcher, Melanie Jaegers went 8-for-14 (.571) in the Shocker Softball Classic, March 6-9 to help lead the Shockers to a 4-1 record on the weekend. The Mesquite, Texas native went 3-for-3 against Big 12 opponent Iowa State, including a home run and three RBIs to lift Wichita State to a 18-16 victory.
On the weekend, Jaegers had two doubles, three home runs and a total of eight RBIs to go with her 1.357 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage.
Williams, a sophomore transfer from Emporia State led the team with a .600 batting average, going 9-for-15 in the Shocker Softball Classic, March 6-9. Williams broke the Wichita State record for RBIs in a game with eight against Iowa State, including a grand slam in the fifth inning to put the Shockers ahead in the game.
On the weekend, the Platte City, Mo., native had two doubles, a triple, two home runs, 13 RBIs and scored 10 runs to go with her 1.267 slugging percentage and .700 on-base percentage. On the season, Williams has a .368 batting average and is first on the team in runs (18), second on the team in RBIs with 21.
The Shockers will look to add to the momentum when they host Western Illinois Wed., March 12, in a double header starting at 4 p.m. Wichita State starts conference play March 15-16 when it hosts MVC newcomer, Loyola, in a three-game swing.
