WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State head coach Jody Adams became the winningest coach in Wichita State women's basketball history with a 85-66 win over Illinois State on Friday night. Adams has collected 114 wins during her six seasons at Wichita State.
Alex Harden became the 19th player in Wichita State women's basketball history to reach the 1,000 point milestone.
Harden finished with 20 points to go along with seven assists and a career high eight steals. Jamillah Bonner led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Michelle Price added 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win.
Illinois State hit first five three-pointers out of the gate, taking a 16-11 lead at the 11:15 mark. Wichita State then fought back with its defense, as back-to-back steals led to layups in transition by Michelle Price and Alex Harden to tie the score at 18 and force the Redbirds to take a timeout with 9:24 remaining in the first half.
Price then connected on another layup to give the Shockers their first lead of game 20-18. Illinois State hit another three-pointer, but Jamillah Bonner answered with a three of her own on the next possession to put Wichita State back up, 23-21, with less than eight minutes remaining in the first 20 minutes.
A jumper at the 2:42 mark by Alex Harden gave her 1,000 points for her career and put the Shockers up 11, 38-27. Jaleesa Chapel hit a free throw on the next Wichita State possession to give her team the biggest lead of the half.
The Shockers shot 17-for-32 (.531) in the first half, including 3-of-7 (.429) from three-point land to take a 40-33 lead into the locker room. The Wichita State defense forced 12 turnovers, scoring 14 points off those turnovers. Jamillah Bonner and Michelle Price scored 11 points each, while Harden added eight points and five assists.
Wichita State opened the second half on 6-0 run capped by a jumper from Kelsey Jacobs to give the Shockers a 46-33 advantage with 18:41 left in the game.
Four minutes later, Harden started another run, this time 9-0, with a driving layup to stretch the Wichita State lead to 54-40. A pair of Michaela Dapprich free throws capped the run and put the Shockers up 61-40 at the 12:14 mark.
The Shockers then went on a 12-4 run that was capped by two free throws from Bonner that gave Wichita State a 75-47 advantage. Moriah Dapprich hit two three-pointers late in the second half as the Shockers cruised to an 85-66 win. The two treys by Dapprich were her first two threes of the season.
The Shockers are next in action on Sunday, Feb. 23 when they host Indiana State at 2 p.m.
