NORMAL, Ill.- Kelsey Jacobs scored a career-high 21 points and recorded a career-high five blocks to help lead the Wichita State women's basketball team past Illinois State 74-58 on Saturday night inside Redbird Arena. It was the 14th consecutive victory for the Shockers on the season.
Alex Harden scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Michelle Price also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was close in the early going, with the Shockers (15-2, 6-0) taking an 8-7 lead at the first media timeout. Illinois State hit a three-pointer out of the media timeout to take a two-point lead, but back-to-back jumpers from Alex Harden gave Wichita State a two-point advantage, 12-10, with 11:33 remaining in the first half.
Marissa Preston made her first bucket of the game with a three-pointer at the 6:31 mark, and Michelle Price hit a layup on the next possession to give the Shockers a 20-16 lead. Two minutes later, Price started a 7-0 for Wichita State that was capped by a bucket from Kelsey Jacobs with 1:27 remaining in the half to put the Shockers up nine, 27-18.
A three-pointer from Illinois State as the first half came to a close cut the Wichita State lead to 27-23 going into the locker room. The Shockers shot 12-for-29 (.414) in the first 20 minutes and held the Redbirds to 6-of-24 (.250) shooting. Harden and Price led the scoring for Wichita State with six points each.
The Shockers opened up the second half on an 11-0 run, forcing Illinois State to miss its first eight shots from the field. The run was capped by an Alie Decker three-pointer that put Wichita State ahead 38-23 with 15:40 remaining in the game.
Illinois State cut the lead down to as many as 10, but the Shockers answered and Jamillah Bonner pushed the lead up to 19, 58-39, at the 6:54 mark. Two minutes later, Jacobs gave Wichita State its biggest lead of the game with a jumper in the paint that saw her team go up 66-47.
Wichita State would not let the lead dip below 12 the rest of the way and went on to win 74-58. The Shockers shot 28-for-56 (.500) from the floor and won the rebounding battle 41-36.
The Shockers will now head to Terre Haute, Ind. for their next Missouri Valley Conference game against the Sycamores on Mon., Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. The game can be heard on 1330 KNSS and will immediately follow Gregg Marshall's coach's show.
