WTen: Shocks Blank Redbirds, Move into MVC Finals

WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State women's tennis team will try to capture its fifth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday against Southern Illinois after taking down Illinois State 4-0 on Saturday at Crestview Country Club.

In doubles play, Rebecca Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque captured their seventh straight victory, defeating Emmie Marx and Stefanie Youngberg, 8-3. Lucia Kovalova and Veronika Blaskova then took down Phyllis Tigges and Kadi Ilves, 8-4 to put the Shockers up 1-0.

Wichita State would only need three singles contests to cement their spot in the MVC finals. Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul defeated Stefanie Youngberg 6-0, 6-0 and freshman Julia Schiller took down Phyllis Tigges 6-3, 6-2 to win her eighth straight match and ninth out of her last ten. Lucia Kovalova sealed the Shocker victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Carolina Abello.

No. 2 seed Southern Illinois defeated Drake 4-2 on Saturday to earn their own spot in the MVC title match. The Shocker defeated the Salukis 7-0 in regular season play.

The championship match on Sunday begins at 10 a.m. at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
