WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State men's tennis team won their final regular season match 6-1 on Saturday against Southern Illinois at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
The doubles play was competitive between the two teams as they split the first two matches. Badr Cherradi and Jonny Rigby defeated Erick Reyes and Ilija Cuic, 8-5, and Guillermo Nicol and Tomislav Gregurovic came back to defeat Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek 8-6 and even the doubles competition at one match apiece.
Matheus Pereira and Tin Ostojic then continued their impressive play and took down Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal in a close match, 9-7. The win secured an undefeated MVC record for the duo as they went a perfect 5-0 at the No. 1 doubles position in conference play. In all, they are 18-3 in dual competition on the season and have won six straight matches.
Pereira continued his impressive play in singles competition, defeating Brandon Florez 6-2, 6-1 to give Wichita State a 2-1 lead in the match. Erick Reyes then put another point on the board for Wichita State by defeating Martijn Admiraal 6-2, 6-1. The win moved Reyes' to 5-0 in conference play and was also his 13th straight victory.
Junior Guillermo Nicol clinched the match for the Shockers by defeating Szymon Opieczonek, 6-4, 6-2. Ostojic and Ilija Cuic also grabbed wins in singles play.
The Shocker men will play in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship April 26-28, which will be hosted by Wichita State at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
