WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State men's tennis team hits the
road this weekend for a their last conference matches of the season.
The Shockers will travel to Omaha, Neb. on
Friday for a match against Creighton at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, they will head
to Des Moines, Iowa for a matchup against Drake that will decide the top two
seeds in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Creighton (9-8, 0-4) will be looking to knock
off the Shockers for their first conference win of the season. They are led
junior Billy Paluch in the number one singles position, where he is 11-6 for
the dual match season.
No. 49 Drake (21-2, 4-0) will be battling the
Shockers for the number one seed in the MVC Tournament. In their last match,
they defeated Southern Illinois, 7-0. Anis Ghorbel leads the way for the
Bulldogs, posting a 14-4 record for the dual match season. James McKie and
Jonathan Hadash are also very strong for the Bulldogs, having sixteen and
fourteen match winning streaks respectively.
Wichita State (14-4, 3-0) is coming off a
pair of weekend victories, defeating Bradley and Illinois State, 6-1. Junior
Matheus Pereira was named the Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week
for his efforts on the week. He won all four matches he took part in against
Bradley and Illinois State to capture the award. Pereira is 27-6 overall in
singles competition on the season and 15-2 in dual matches. He has won eleven
straight singles contests. Guillermo Nicol has captured twelve straight singles
contests for the Shockers.
David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira will
lead the Shockers in doubles, posting a stellar 25-7 overall record and 14-3
dual match record for the season. Together, they have won nine out of their
last ten matches.
After the weekend, the Shockers will take
part in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Omaha, Neb.
