PORTLAND, Ore. -- Wichita State put together a tenacious second-half rally
against Virginia Commonwealth Thursday at the Rose Garden Arena, but the
Shockers' final shot fell short in a 62-59 loss in the second round of the NCAA
Tournament.
The No. 5 seed Shockers trailed by as many as 13 points in the second
half before fighting back to take a two-point lead with 2:03 remaining in the
game on a three-pointer from Toure' Murry.
No. 12 seed VCU answered by scoring five-straight points to grab a
three-point lead with 20 seconds left on the clock. Wichita State's Garrett
Stutz missed a three-pointer as time expired, ending the Shockers' season with
a 27-6 record.
VCU (29-6) advanced to play the winner of Thursday's game between No.
4-seed Indiana and No. 13-seed New Mexico State Saturday.
Joe Ragland led the Shockers with 15 points. Carl Hall and Murry scored
10 points each. Hall added a game-high eight rebounds. The No. 18/19 Shockers
shot 38.7 percent overall.
Bradford Burgess led VCU with 16 points as the Rams finished the night
shooting 42.4 percent.
The Shockers took a 3-2 lead on their first field goal of the game, a
driving layup by Ragland at the 17:12 mark of the first half.
Both teams struggled early offensively, with the Shockers shooting 23
percent (3-of-13) and VCU 36 percent (4-of-11) with 13:42 remaining in the
first half and VCU leading, 10-7.
VCU built a 21-13 lead with about 8:30 remaining in the half before the
Shockers answered with an 11-0 run, capped with a Hall field goal. Wichita State
led 24-21 with about 5:30 left on the clock in the half.
VCU regained a seven-point edge on a Burgess jumper with about one
minute left in the half to lead, 32-25.
The Rams took a 34-25 lead into halftime, paced by 13 points from
Burgess. Hall led the Shockers with six points in the first 20 minutes and
seven rebounds. Wichita State shot 31.4 percent in the half (11-of-35) and went
1-for-9 from three-point range. VCU made 14-of-37 shots in the half (37.8
percent), making 3-of-13 treys.
The Rams extended to a 13-point lead before a 9-2 Shocker run.
David Kyles sparked the Shockers' offense during the stretch with seven
points. Kyles picked up a dunk, steal and layup and three-point bucket during
the run. Wichita State then cut the VCU lead to 46-40 with 12:96 remaining.
A trey from Ragland followed by layup from Stutz cut the Rams' lead to
54-53.
Murry's three-point shot with less than two minutes remaining gave the
Shockers a 59-57 lead, but a trey from Burgess and jumper from Darius Theus put
VCU back on top with 20 seconds remaining in the game.
The Shockers, in their ninth NCAA Tournament appearance, fell to 8-10 all-time
in NCAA Tournament games.
