WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The Wichita State women's tennis team
dropped their second match of the weekend, 4-3, in a close battle against No.
66 Marshall at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Lutfiana Budiharto and Carla Venticinque were able to defeat
Ellie Ball and Kara Kucin of Marshall, 8-2, in the first doubles match of the
day. It was not enough for the Shockers though, as Marshall was able to win the
final two doubles matches to take the doubles point.
In the singles competition, the Shocks would take the first
three out of four matches to pull ahead 3-2. Then, Maria Voscekova of Marshall
defeated Delia Damaschin in a hard fought match, 7-6, 7-6, to tie it at 3-3. In
the final match of the day, Lutfiana Budiharto fell to Dominika Zaprazna, 6-2,
3-6, 7-5, to give the match to the Thundering Herd.
"Lutfi has won so many big matches for us over the years.
There's no one we would rather have playing with the overall score three all,"
said Head Coach Colin Foster. "Give all the credit in that last set to
Marshall, they played at a high level throughout that set and earned the win."
One of the bright spots of the weekend was Satjaporn
Mahajaroenkul. She was able to go 2-0 in singles competition for Shockers. "Yok
had a great weekend and is playing with such heart and energy," said Foster.
"She's waited awhile after sitting out her transfer year to get this
opportunity and she is making it count."
Wichita State will continue play next weekend when they
travel to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the Cornhuskers at 5 p.m. on Friday,
February 24th, and Colorado State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February
25th. Then, on Sunday the 26th they travel to Omaha, Neb.
to take on Creighton at 11 a.m. in their first conference match of the season.
