WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State baseball team is ranked 32nd
in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll released on Dec. 20.
The Shockers return six starters and eight pitchers from a
team that went 35-25 a year ago.
Senior first baseman Johnny Coy, who has been named a first
team preseason All-American by the NCBWA, hit .344 with 17 doubles, nine home
runs and 63 RBI last season. Coy also
earned first team all-Valley honors in 2012.
Junior pitcher Cale Elam also returns after being named
second team all-Valley last season. Elam
went 6-4 with a 2.25 ERA, nine saves and 43 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched in
2012. After serving as the closer the
last two seasons, Elam is expected to move into the starting rotation in 2013.
The Shockers open the season on Fri., Feb. 15, 2013 against
Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
