WICHITA, Kan. — Haleigh Lankster's game-high 20 points paced
the Wichita State women's basketball team in a 65-58 win against Missouri
Valley Conference foe Creighton Sunday at Charles Koch Arena.
Sunday's win gave the Shockers their first-ever 4-0 start to
conference play and pushed Wichita State's winning streak to seven games.
Jessica Diamond added 13 points to go with her game-high
eight rebounds and five assists in front of 1,644 fans.
The Shockers improved to 10-5 overall as Creighton fell to
6-8 overall and 0-3 in Valley play. Sarah Nelson led the Bluejays with 14
points.
Creighton jumped out to the early lead, but Wichita State
fought back to grab its first lead of the game, 8-7, on a layup from Lankster
at the 16:15 mark of the first half.
A layup and free throw from Taylor Johnson later pushed
Creighton to a 13-10 edge, tying the Bluejays' largest lead of the game. The
Shockers answered with two Lankster free throws and a Krystle Henderson jumper
midway through the half to take a 16-13 lead.
A Jazimen Gordon jumper at the 6:20 mark pushed the Shockers
ahead by four points. A Diamond three-pointer, followed by a Gordon jumper,
gave the Shockers an 11-point edge, 31-20.
Creighton cut the score to 33-28 at halftime. Lankster led
the Shockers with eight first-half points. Diamond led the Shockers with five
rebounds and three assists as the Shockers shot 52 percent in the half. Carli
Tritz and Johnson paced Creighton with six points each.
In the opening minutes of the second half, a Diamond jumper
and two free throws from Jasmine Jones regained a 10-point Wichita State lead. A
steal and layup from Diamond pushed the Shockers ahead, 53-42.
Lankster's three-pointer with 5:15 left gave the Shockers
their largest lead of the game, 58-44.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Creighton kick-started an
8-0 Bluejay run in the closing minutes to cut the score to 60-56, but the
Shockers held on for the win.
The Shockers conclude a three-game homestand at 2:05 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 14 against Missouri State. Kansas 22 will televise the game.
