WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita
State defeated the Air Force Falcons on Sunday afternoon, 4-3, at Genesis
Health Club. The Shockers closed
out the weekend at 2-0 as they defeated UTSA on Friday afternoon.
Air Force took a 1-0 lead to begin the match after they
captured the doubles points. David
Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira won their match against Lance Wilhelm and Grant
Taylor, 8-2 in the No. 1 match but WSU came up short in the No. 2 and No. 3
matches.
WSU stormed back in singles behind the strong play of
Pereira and Cavalcanti in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, respectively. Pereira defeated Lance Wilhelm, 7-5,
6-2 and Cavalcanti cruised in his match against Andy Jackson, 6-1, 6-0. Erick Reyes and Juan Estenssoro won the
No. 4 and No. 5 matches to help the Shockers clinch the match, 4-3.
"It was a good weekend in singles but we have a lot of work
to do in doubles," WSU head coach Brad Louderback said. "We played Air Force four years ago and
they are a much deeper team from top to bottom and they play at 100% and are disciplined
and don't make many mistakes. It was a good win for us today."
The Shockers will return to the court on Friday, Feb. 10
when they play Tulsa. The match
will be played in Tulsa.
