WICHITA, Kan.- Plagued
by cold shooting and untimely turnovers Wichita State couldn't cash in on their
bid to set a new school record for consecutive victories falling to Illinois State, 68-59, Friday night at Charles Koch Arena.
Trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half the
Shockers were unable to close the gap, in front of a home crowd of 3,573, any closer than nine points as the
Redbirds found a way to thwart each Shocker run to maintain a comfortable lead
throughout.
Jessica Diamond scored 15 points to lead the Shockers while
Jazimen Gordon and Haleigh Lankster scored 12 and 10 points respectively.
Katie Broadway led four Redbirds in double figures with 17
points. Candace Sykes grabbed 13 rebounds to go along with her 16 points.
After stretching their lead as high as nine points in the
first half Illinois State took a six-point advantage into the halftime break. Marley
Hall led the Redbirds with eight points and three rebounds while Sykes cleaned
up on the glass with eight rebounds in addition to her five points. Jessica
Diamond led the Shockers in the first half with nine points on four-of-six
shooting. The scoring difference in the first half was attributed to Wichita
State connecting on only nine-of-28 field goal attempts (32 percent) compared
to the Redbirds shooting a healthy 46-percent.
The Shockers next game will tipoff Sunday at 2:05 p.m. against Indiana State at Charles Koch Arena.
