WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State junior Chynna Turner's 14
points led the Shockers in a 53-51 win against Missouri State Saturday in a
women's basketball game that came down to the final moments at Charles Koch
Arena.
Missouri State cut the Shockers' lead to two points with
less than one minute remaining in regulation. Lady Bear Casey Garrison took a
half-court shot as time expired, but the shot missed, sealing the Shockers' Missouri
Valley Conference win.
The Shockers remain the lone undefeated team in the MVC
standings, improving to 11-5 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Missouri State
fell to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the MVC. Indiana State, the league's other
undefeated team entering Saturday's schedule, lost to Bradley.
Shocker junior Jessica Diamond picked up 12 points as
Wichita State won an eighth-straight game. Junior Jazimen Gordon just missed a
double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds for Wichita State.
Christiana Shorter paced the Lady Bears with 14 points and a
game-high 13 rebounds. Garrison added 12 points - all in the second half - for
Missouri State.
The Shockers forced Missouri State into 24 turnovers and
scored 21 points off of them.
Wichita State grabbed an early 3-0 lead on Haleigh
Lankster's layup and free throw at the 17:52 mark of the half.
Missouri State took an 8-7 lead on a free throw from Lacey
Boshe with about 14 minutes remaining, but a Kelsey Jacobs' jumper regained the
Shocker lead.
The Shockers took a 17-10 edge on back-to-back jumpers by
Gordon just under the halfway mark of the half as part of an 8-0 run.
A jumper from Boshe cut Wichita State's lead to one point with
less than three minutes remaining before halftime.
Wichita State took a 23-20 lead into halftime, led by
Turner's 10 points. Gordon added six more points for the Shockers. Missouri
State grabbed a 19-13 edge in rebounding by halftime and went on to outrebound
the Shockers, 39-25.
A Gordon jumper gave the Shockers their first double-digit
lead of the game, 38-28, in the opening minutes of the second half.
The Lady Bears answered with a 12-2 run over 5:19 to cut the
Shocker lead to one point, 42-41, with seven minutes left in the game.
The Shockers extended back out to a seven-point lead, but Garrison's
jumper with 49 seconds remaining brought Missouri State to within two points,
53-51. Garrison's missed half-court shot ended the game.
Missouri State became the ninth opponent the Shockers held
below 60 points this season.
The Shockers next take to the road to play at Evansville at
7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 and at Southern Illinois at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Jan.
21.
