Braves Take Down Shockers, 5-4, with Walk-off Single

PEORIA, Ill.- Brittany Fairbairn hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Braves to a 5-4 win over Wichita State at Laura Bradley Field Sunday afternoon.

Fairbairn hit a two-out single to left-field to score Julie Sherman and save the Braves from a series sweep on senior day.

Wichita State claimed an early 4-1 lead, but couldn't hold on for the victory as the Shockers' four-game win-streak was snapped.

WSU had nine hits on the day and six different Shockers' picked up at least one. Heather Gerritse, Jamie Hull, and Brittney Osborn each picked up two hits in the game. Both Gerritse and Hull were 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored. Hull hit a solo home run and picked up an RBI. She now sits in fourth place all-time with 24 career home runs.

Osborn was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Both Rachel Milnark and Erin Carney went 1-for-3 and scored a run. Carney also picked up one RBI.

Brianna Smet went 0.2 innings and picked up the loss for the Shockers in the circle. All three pitchers saw action in the game as both Katie Armagost and Sloan Anderson gave up two runs. Smet gave up the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With the loss, Wichita State falls to 20-36 on the year and 12-14 in Missouri Valley Conference action. Bradley improves to 13-40 on the season and 6-19 in conference play.

Wichita State finishes the Missouri Valley Conference season wtih a 12-14 record, which is good for the seventh seed in the MVC Tournament next week. The Shockers will face Creighton in the first round. The Bradley win and an Evansville loss allows the Braves to sneak their way into the conference tournament. They will face Missouri State in the first round of the tournament.

After being held scoreless for three innings, the Shockers broke through in the top of the fourth inning by scoring three runs on four hits and one error. Gerritse started the inning off for WSU with a single out to left-field. Hayley Temple moved her over to second base and then Milnark followed it up with a single of her own back up the middle. Carney picked up the first RBI of the inning when she scored Gerritse with a line drive out to right-field. The singles from Milnark and Carney extend their hit-streaks out to five games. Osborn kept the inning going for the Shockers as she picked up two RBI by scoring Milnark and Carney with a single out to left-field. Wichita State claimed a 3-0 lead at the end of the half inning.

Bradley got one run back in the bottom of the inning making it a 3-1 game by scoring one run on two hits and one error. Kate Singler picked up the RBI in the inning scoring Brianne Joseph with a double out to center-field.

Hull made it a 4-1 game in the top of the fifth inning when she hit a solo home run over the fence in center-field. It was Hull's eighth home run of the season and 24th of her career. With that home run, Hull moved into fourth place all-time in the history of the Shockers' program. She sits in fourth with Patti Oleson and Britnee Barnett.

The Braves evened the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning by scoring three runs on four hits and one error. Brittany Fairbairn picked up two RBI in the inning with a triple down the right-field line.

The Shockers return to action when they travel to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for the second consecutive year. Wichita State will travel to Springfield, Mo. with the tournament play beginning on Thurs., May 12th. More information on the Shockers' seed and game time will be released on Monday.
