WICHITA, Kan.- The Missouri State Bears extended its win streak out to seven games as they took both games of the doubleheader from the Shockers at Wilkins Stadium Wednesday evening.
The Bears won the first game of the doubleheader by the score of 5-3, and then scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind and win the second game, 2-1.
The Shockers held MSU scoreless on just four hits for six innings. The Bears stormed back and doubled their hits total in the seventh inning to claim a 2-1 lead.
Senior Brianna Smet went 5.2 innings and held the Bears scoreless on just four hits. Sloan Anderson fell to 5-7 on the year as she picked up the loss in the circle. She went 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
Brittney Osborn led the Shockers at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Heather Gerritse was 1-for-2 in the game, but 4-for-5 on the day. Erin Carney, Rachel Milnark, and Hayley Temple all picked up one hit in the game. Temple scored the Shockers' only run of the game.
Missouri State's starting pitcher, Savannah Wiggins, improved to 6-2 on the season with the win in the circle. She went 6.1 innings and gave up just one run on six hits. Natalie Rose picked up her fifth save of the season.
With the loss, Wichita State falls to 14-30 on the season and 6-10 in the Valley. Missouri State improves to 22-17 on the year and 10-6 in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Wichita
State was the first to get on the scoreboard. The Shockers scored one run on
three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead over the
Bears. WSU loaded the bases for Brittney Osborn who reached safely on an
infield single to the right side. The hit to the opposite side of the field
allowed Hayley Temple to come home safely and give the Shocks the one run edge.
The Bears scored their two runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning to take the second game of the doubleheader from Wichita State.
The Shockers wrap up their six-game homestand with a three-game series against Evansville over the weekend. They return to action on Fri., April 22 at 2:00 p.m. for a doubleheader with the Purple Aces. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sat., April 23 at 12:00 p.m.
Bears Snap Shockers Win Streak With 5-3 Win
WICHITA, Kan.- Missouri State scored five runs on twelve hits to snap Wichita State's four-game winning streak in the first game of the doubleheader at Wilkins Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
The loss to Missouri State is the Shockers' first Missouri Valley Conference loss in four games. Wichita State had won five of its last six games heading into the doubleheader.
The Shockers fall to 14-29 on the season and 6-9 in the Valley. Missouri State improves to 21-17 on the year and 9-6 in conference action.
Heather Gerritse led the Shockers' offensive attack as she was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Jamie Hull was 2-for-3 on the day with a double and two runs scored. Sammie Shook went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the game.
Katie Armagost got the start in the circle for the Shockers and fell to 5-11 on the season with the loss. She went 1.1 innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Sloan Anderson came into the game from the bullpen and went 5.2 innings. She gave up just one run on six hits.
Natalie Rose improved to 16-14 on the season as she picked up the win in the circle for Missouri State. Rose went the complete 7.0 innings and gave up just three runs on seven hits. She recorded 10 strikeouts in the outing.
Missouri State took an early 2-0 lead in the the top of the first inning as they scored two runs on two hits and one error. Kirstin Cutter led off the inning for the Bears with a single to left-field. Tyler Porter advanced the runner with an infield single. Cutter came around to score on a sacrifice bunt from Jenna Schwark and an error in the infield. MSU made it a 2-0 game when Porter scored on an infield putout at first base.
The Shockers answered and got one run back in the bottom of the inning on two hits and one error. Jamie Hull reached first base on an infield single with two outs in the inning. Heather Gerritse followed it up with a single out to left-field. The leftfielder picked up an error while making a play on the ball which allowed Hull to score and make it a 2-1 game.
The Bears extended their lead out to 4-1 as they put runs on the scoreboard for the second consecutive innings. MSU scored two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. Christa Gammon picked up an RBI in the inning as she scored Heather Duckworth with a triple down the left-field line. Cutter scored Gammon with a bloop single in left-field, which made it a 4-1 game.
Missouri State retired eight-straight batters after giving up a Shocker run in the first inning. Wichita State broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored one run on two hits. Sammie Shook made it a 4-2 game as she allowed Temple to go from first to home on a double down the left-field line.
Wichita State made it a one-run game by scoring one run on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles from Hull and Gerritse allowed Hull to score her second run of the game and make it a 4-3 game in favor of the Bears.
Missouri State picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the last inning. The Shocks failed to make a last inning comeback as the Bears held onto the victory.
