Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Penn State evened the weekend series against
Wichita State with a 4-2 win Saturday at Eck Stadium.
Tyler Grimes led the Shockers with two hits and Preston
Springer ended Penn State's shutout in the bottom of the eighth inning when his
single through the right side scored Josh Halbert.
Penn State pitcher Steven Hill (2-1) pitched 7.1 innings,
allowing three hits, one run and striking out six to pick up the win.
Shocker pitcher Josh Smith (3-1) was credited with the loss.
He pitched 5.2 innings allowed nine hits and struck out two batters.
The No. 26 Shockers fell to 13-5 overall. Penn State
improved to 11-6.
Penn State grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Ryan Clark singled to left field, advancing Bobby Jacobs to
second base and scoring Joey DeBernardis with one out.
Michael Glantz followed with a double to left center. Clark
advanced to third, then was tagged out at home by Shocker catcher Chris O'Brien.
Jacobs scored on the play for the Nittany Lions.
The Nittany Lions added two more runs in the top of the
eighth inning.
Jordan Steranka tripled to right field and scored on a
throwing error by Shocker second baseman Walker Davidson. Luis Montesinos, who
walked earlier in the inning, also scored.
The Shockers' second run came in the bottom of the ninth
inning. Don Lambert doubled to left field to score Micah Green, cutting Penn
State's lead to two runs.
A rain delay Saturday afternoon pushed the start time of the
game from 2 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
The Shockers had opened the series with a 9-0 win Friday. The
three-game series concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Eck Stadium.
