WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State advanced to the second round of the NIT with a
76-49 first-round win against Nebraska Wednesday at Charles Koch Arena.
Three Shockers posted double-digit points totals, led by
David Kyles' 13 points, as the Wichita State men's basketball team advanced to
play Virginia Tech (22-11), which deafeted Bethune-Cookman, 79-54, in a first-round game Wednesday. The Shockers will travel to play at 10 a.m. Sunday at Virginia Tech.
Wednesday marked the No. 4-seed Shockers' second-straight
NIT appearance and 12th overall. Wichita State improved to 25-8
overall. Fifth-seeded Nebraska closed the season with a 19-13 record in front
of a crowd of 7,336.
The Shockers shot 46.2 percent (24-for-52) overall and 42.3
percent (11-for-26) from behind the 3-point line. Wichita State outrebounded
the Cornhuskers, 34-32, led by Durley's six boards. Durley also added 12
points, followed closely by Graham Hatch's 11 points.
Jorge Brian Diaz and Lance Jeter paced Nebraska with 12
points each. The Cornhuskers were held to 34 percent shooting overall and 11.1
percent from behind the 3-point line.
The Shockers built a 10-0 lead early in the game, opening
play with back-to-back 3-pointers from Joe Ragland and Hatch. The Cornhuskers' first field goal of the game
came at the 15:42 mark on a 3-pointer from Brandon Ubel, which kick-started a
7-0 Nebraska run.
Wichita State responded with another run - this time 14-2 -
to take a 15-point lead midway through the first half. A jumper from Aaron
Ellis, followed by a 3-pointer from Kyles, and free throws from Ben Smith,
extended the Shockers to the double-digit margin. The Shockers shot 50 percent
(7-for-14) through the game's first 10 minutes.
The Shockers jumped out to a 29-12 lead on Hatch's 3-pointer
and Durley's layup with about seven minutes remaining in the half.
Kyles' second 3-pointer of the game with about 5:30 on the
clock pushed the Shockers to a 20-point edge. An acrobatic layup from Toure'
Murry gave Wichita State a 38-16 lead.
The Shockers took a 40-20 lead into halftime. Hatch led Wichita State with eight points. Durley, Smith and
Kyles each added six points. Diaz and Jeter each had five points for Nebraska. The
Shockers, who shot 46.2 percent (12-for-26) in the half, outrebounded Nebraska,
19-15, in the first 20 minutes of play.
A 7-2 run in a span of about 90 seconds by Wichita State
opened the second half and gave the Shockers a 25-point lead.
A Durley jumper, then dunk, less than five minutes into the
second half pushed Wichita State ahead, 54-25.
Nebraska cut the Shockers' lead to 23 points with
four-straight free throws with about 12 minutes to go in the game.
A Murry layup and two free throws from Durley with less than
five minutes left on the clock boosted the Shockers to a 27-point lead.
Wichita State is now 13-21 overall in NCAA, NIT and CBI
tournament games combined. The Shockers lost, 74-70, to Nevada in the first round of the NIT last season.
