LUBBOCK, Texas- Holly Eckert picked up five RBI as the Shockers' stormed past St. John's, 10-6, in the second game of the second day of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas Saturday afternoon.
Junior catcher Holly Eckert led the Shockers going 1-for-3 with a grandslam, five RBI, and one run scored. Sophomore Sammie Shook also had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Hayley Temple picked up an RBI going 1-for-3 at the plate. The Shockers had seven hits as a team as Kiersten Dixon, Jamie Hull, and Danika Miller also picked up a hit in the contest. Hull also picked up her fifth RBI of the day. Freshman Erin Carney picked up four walks on the game and scored three runs.
Katie Armagost got the start in the circle and improved her record to 3-4 with the win over the Red Storm. She went 4.0 innings giving up three runs (one earned) off of four hits. Freshman Sloan Anderson picked up first save in a Shockers uniform. She went 3.0 inning giving up three runs (one earned) off of four hits. Anderson also picked up two strikeouts.
Red Storm's pitcher Ashley Beza fell to 1-5 on the season. She went 1.1 innings, while giving up four runs off of two hits.
The Shockers took an early 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs off of three hits. The bases were loaded with one out as Holly Eckert hit a grandslam over the fence in left field to put the Shockers on the scoreboard. It was the team's seventh home run of the season and fifth of the tournament. It was also Eckert's first career grand slam, as well as the first home run of her career. The four runs batted in is a personal career high for RBI in a single game for Eckert.
Wichita State kept the runs coming in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs off of one hit. Erin Carney got things started leading off the inning with a walk. Sammie Shook then singled with a hard hit down the third base line. Two consecutive walks to Meghan Boston and Brittney Osborn scored Carney and gave the Shockers their first run of the inning. Eckert picked up her fifth RBI of the game bringing home Shook with a sacrifice fly out to center field. The fifth RBI sets another career high for RBI in a single game for Eckert. Wichita State took a 7-0 lead at the end of three innings of play.
The Shockers decided to make it three consecutive innings of scoring as they scored two runs off of two hits and two errors in the top of the fourth inning. Dixon led off the inning with a double to left center field and then Jamie Hull brought her home with a hard hit to the right side of the field. Hull turned the single into a triple with an error on the right fielder. Erin Carney forced an error on the Red Storm as she stole second and allowed Hull to score to make the score 9-0 in favor of the Shockers.
St. John's scored five runs off of four hits and two errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to save them from a shutout and the mercy rule. The Shockers still led 9-5 at the end of five innings of play.
WSU scored one run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 10-5. The Red Storm made the score 10-6 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. The Shockers held on and won 10-6.
The Shockers return to action Sunday afternoon to wrap up the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic against #19 Texas Tech at noon.
