SAN ANTONIO - Freshman Alex Harden turned in a team-high 15 points to lead the Wichita State women's basketball team to a 69-56 victory at UT-San Antonio Friday night. It was WSU's first road win of the year and improved the team's record to 4-5.
The Shockers trailed only once, 4-3, before reeling off a pair of 6-0 runs early in the first half. A Harden three-point play gave WSU a 22-10 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first half and the Shockers took a 36-25 lead into halftime.
A 12-2 run over a five-minute stretch in the second half lifted the Shockers to a comfortable 50-32 lead and UTSA never again closed to within single digits.Â
Harden connected on 4-of-6 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws to gather her 15 points, nearly doubling her previous career-high of eight. The freshman also collected five rebounds and three assists, plus two steals in 22 minutes. Jessica Diamond added 10 and was the only other Shocker in double figures. She has tallied double-figure scoring in all but one game this year.
Junior transfer Jasmine Jones contributed her most productive offensive game as a Shocker with eight points, including 6-for-6 free throw shooting, four rebounds, and three steals. Redshirt freshman Kelsey Jacobs led the team with seven rebounds and added six points.
As a team, the Shockers produced their most effective free throw shooting game of the year. Wichita State hit 18-of-22 from the line for 81.8 percent. The Shocks out-rebounded UTSA, 40-29, and the Shocker bench out-paced the Roadrunners, 40-14.Â
Wichita State returns home for finals week before returning to action Dec. 18 vs. UT-Arlington at the 2011 Beach Classic in Long Beach, California.   Â
