MANHATTAN, Kan. - Chynna Turner pulled down a career-high 14
rebounds and recorded her second double-double of the year against a "BCS"-level
team on the road this year but the Wichita State University women's basketball
team dropped a 60-34 decision at Kansas State Wednesday night.
In the first game between the in-state programs since 2000,
Turner connected on 5-of-9 field goals and added a free throw to pace the
Shockers with 11 points. Her 14 boards
were a career-best and the most by a WSU player this year. Earlier this season she collected 12 points
and 10 boards at Arizona.
The team as whole, however, shot just 19% from the field,
making 11 of 58 shots from the floor and failing to knock down a three-point attempt
in five tries.
Brittany Chambers led Kansas State with 17 points, exactly
the total she needed to reach 1,000 for her career. Jalana Childs pitched in with 12 points and
five rebounds.
The Shockers held their own defensively, keeping the
Wildcats below 38% shooting and holding the Big 12 opponent to 60 points. Additionally, WSU out-shot K-State at the
free throw line, 22-14, marking the first time this year the Shockers took more
attempts from the charity stripe than their opponent. The Shockers fell to 30-2 lifetime under Jody
Adams when shooting more free throws than the opposition.
Jessica Diamond added 10 points for the Shockers and has scored
double figures in seven of WSU's eight games.
The junior added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Freshman Molly O'Brien pitched in with five
points from the free throw line and Kelsey Jacobs contributed eight rebounds
off the bench.
Wichita State hauled in 54 rebounds, one shy of the team
record, and out-boarded the 'Cats by nine.
Game two of the team's current six-game road trip is Friday
night at UT-San Antonio. Tip-off is
scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be carried locally on AM 1330 KNSS.
