WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State used a 20-0 run in the first
half to take the lead and control of the women's basketball game against SMU
Saturday at Charles Koch Arena on the way to a 63-43 win.
Senior Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers with a game-high 17
points and six steals, as Wichita State shot 51.9 percent as a team. Junior
Jazimen Gordon finished with 10 points for the Shockers and Jessica Diamond
pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
The Shockers held SMU to 24.5-percent shooting in the game, despite
Wichita State committing 26 turnovers in the win.
Wichita State improved to 3-4 on the season in front of
1,879 fans in the Shockers' final game of a three-date homestand.
Christine Elliott, from Wichita, paced SMU with 13 points,
surpassing 1,000 career points for the senior.
SMU (4-4) grabbed an early 6-4 lead before the Shockers put
together their 20-0 run during a span of just more than six minutes.
Lankster scored 11 points during the run, including a
three-pointer and steal followed by a layup, to push the Shockers to a 24-6
lead. Lankster made her first six shots, as the Shockers went 10-for-12 in the
first 9:36 of the game.
Wichita State led by as many as 22 points in the first half
and took a 36-19 lead into halftime. The Shockers finished the half shooting 64
percent (16-of-25) while holding SMU to 26.1 percent shooting. Lankster led all
players with 13 first-half points and perfect 6-for-6 shooting. She also added
a team-leading three steals. Jazimen Gordon made her four first-half shots to
pick up eight points for the Shockers in the opening 20 minutes.
Elliott paced SMU with nine points in the first half.
In the second half, the Shockers' hot shooting cooled off a
bit, but Wichita State still made 11-of-27 shots and held SMU to 7-of-30 shooting.
SMU came within 13 points of the Shockers on an Elliott
layup to cut the Shockers' lead to 36-23 at the 18:19 mark of the second half.
A Diamond layup pushed the Shockers out to a 58-37 lead late
in the second half. A Krystle Henderson three-pointer pushed Wichita State back
out to a 20-point lead with less than 90 seconds remaining and an Alicia
Sanchez jumper maintained the margin in the final minute.
The Shockers ended a three-game homestand Saturday and hit
the road for the next six games. Wichita State next plays at Kansas State at 7
p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7. The Shockers then play at UT-San Antonio Dec. 9, followed
by two games in the Beach Classic in Long Beach, Calif. Dec. 18-19. The
Shockers open the Missouri Valley Conference season at UNI Dec. 29 and at
Bradley Dec. 31. Wichita State next plays at home Jan. 5 against Drake.
