LONG BEACH, Calif. - Jessica Diamond poured in 19 points and
the Wichita State University women's basketball team rolled to a 90-64 victory
over UT-Arlington in the semi-finals of the 2011 Beach Classic Sunday
night. The Shockers scored 30 points off
turnovers and shot a season-high 59.3% in taming the Mavericks.
Wichita State trailed only briefly, 6-5, early in the game
before unloading separate 8-0 and 14-2 runs to pull away. Diamond tallied 14 of her points, on 5-for-5
shooting, in the opening stanza to lead the charge.
The second half went much the same way as WSU knocked down
five straight shots to start the half and one at one point registered 70%
shooting for the game. The team
eventually settled for 35 field goals in 59 attempts (.593). The Shockers also out-rebounded UTA, 35-33,
and dished out a season-high 20 assists against 16 turnovers.
Haleigh Lankster added 12 points and two steals while Alex
Harden delivered 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. She contributed two of WSU's 20 fast break
points on an amazing lay-up in the second half where she started down the lane
with a right-hand dribble. As she
elevated, Harden switched over to her left hand and scooped in the contested
shot to finish on the break.
The victory gave WSU back-to-back wins for the first time
this season and evened the team's record at 5-5. The 90 points were the most scored by WSU
this year and the most since putting up 95 last year at Koch Arena against
Texas-Pan American.
The Shockers advance to the championship game of the 2011
Beach Classic against the host school, Long Beach State. The 49ers topped Western Michigan, 76-56, in
the first game of the tournament. The
game will be broadcast exclusively online at www.ShockerRadio.com.
