2012 Inductee Brings Coach-Athlete List to 122
WICHITA, Kan. - All-Americans Carl Hall, Mike Pelfrey and Desiraye Osburn have been selected as the 2012 Class of the Wichita State Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for halftime of Wichita State's 7:05 p.m., Jan. 21 men's basketball game against Southern Illinois, while a reception and dinner is set for 7 p.m., Jan. 20 in the Charles Koch Arena Preferred Health Systems Multi-Purpose Center.
Cost for the dinner is $25 per person, and paid reservations must be made to the Shocker Ticket Office no later than Fri., Jan. 13, 2012 by calling 316/978-FANS, or in person at the WSU Ticket Office located on the South side of Charles Koch Arena.
The addition of this year's class brings the total of former coaches and student-athletes in the Hall of Fame to 122, while there are 12 at-large selections.
Here's a look at each 2012 inductee's success at Wichita State :
Carl Hall, Baseball (1991-94)... Outfielder Carl Hall earned All-America honors as an outfielder for Wichita State in 1994, and was also named the 1994 Missouri Valley Conference Player-of-the-Year after helping the team to a 45-19, 19-2 MVC record and a .354 batting average, seven triples and 42 stolen bases. A member of four NCAA Tournament teams, Hall was also on four MVC Championship teams and three MVC Tournament Championship teams. He was also chosen in 2007 to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial team, and to Wichita State's 25-year anniversary Team.
Desiraye Osburn, Cross Country/Track & Field (2003-05)... All-American Desiraye Osburn, a native of Lyndon, Kan., produced four All-America titles (three in track and field, one in cross country). In her tenure, she also won the Midwest Regional cross country championship, a first for the Shocker program, won the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference cross country championship, and won back-to-back J.K. Gold Classic cross country meets. As a senior, she was named the 2005 Valley Athlete of the Year, the Greater Wichita Sports Commission's College Female Athlete of the Year, and set MVC all-time indoor and outdoor records in four events. And this was only in a two-year span.
Osburn also completed her senior season in cross country with seven top three finishes, four Valley Athlete of the Week honors and an All-American honor.
Mike Pelfrey, Baseball (2003-05)... All-American Mike Pelfrey, from Wichita, Kan., earned first-team All-America honors in 2005 by Collegiate Baseball, American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after going 12-3 in with a 1.93 ERA and 143 strikeouts. During his three-year career at WSU, Pelfrey went 33-7 with a Shocker record 2.18 ERA. He also finished second in career strikeouts with 366. A three-time first-team All-MVC honoree, he was also the Valley's 2004 and 2005 Pitcher of the Year after 2003 Freshman of the Year honors. He was also a three-time ABCA all-region selection and was named the Valley's 2007 All-Centennial team.
Pelfrey was drafted ninth overall by the New York Mets during the first day of the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft, and became the 10th Shocker overall to be taken in the first round. He is the fifth highest Shocker taken in WSU history.
