WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State held off a charging Winthrop team, 71-69, Wednesday night, to give Shocker Head Coach Jody Adams her 50th win at the school on the back of a career-high 18 points by Jazimen Gordon.
Gordon, who was 9-for-17 from the field, was backed by Jessica Diamond and Chynna Turner, who had 17 and 14 points, respectively. Turner also had a team-high nine rebounds.
For Winthrop (2-3), Diana Choibekova scored a game-high 20 points to lead four double-figure scorers, which included Katie Fitzgerald, who also turned in a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Wichita State went on a 10-1 run to open the second frame, and take a 42-37 lead before Winthrop coach Marlene Stollings called a timeout to break the momentum at the 18:32 mark.
The Shockers maintained a steady lead until Winthrop cut it to one, 50-49, with a three-pointer by Choibekova just before the 12-minute mark. Her two free throws put the Eagles ahead, 51-50, at the 11:31 mark.
WSU tied it up again, 51-all, with a free throw by Jasmine Jones at the 11:18 mark.
Winthrop then kept one-step ahead of the Shockers with made baskets, but the Shockers answered each time over the next three minutes before re-taking the lead when Lankster made the back end of a two-shot foul at the 8:05 mark to put WSU back ahead, 56-55.
It was WSU's turn to stay ahead, and the Shockers forced Winthrop to play a step behind over the remaining eight minutes.
At 1:19, the Eagles cut the lead to five, 71-66, on a Taylor Calvert jumper, and the Eagle's McClanahan cut the lead to four with a free throw, 71-67, before an offensive foul the next time gave WSU the ball and took her out of the game with her fifth foul with 26 seconds remaining.
A jump ball on the in-bounds gave Winthrop the ball with 23 seconds left under their basket, and they capitalized after three misses and rebounded to cut the lead to two, 71-69, which fashioned the final score.
In the opening frame, the Shockers took a 10-4 lead into the first media timeout at 15:25 on the back of a 6-0 run that included two Diamond jumpers.
By the 12 minute media break, Winthrop had closed the gap to one, 13-12, on three buckets, including a three-pointer from the left corner by Samiya Wright at the 12:13 mark.
Two free throws by Wright put Winthrop up, 14-13, after a O'Brien foul, but WSU answered with two Gordon baskets, to extend the lead to 17-14.
Winthrop cut the lead, 21-18, after a Fitzgerald jumper, but the Shockers went on another 6-0 run to go up 26-18 at the 6:19 mark.
Winthrop cut the lead again, and with six-straight free throws, trailed only 26-24, into the four-minute media break.
Both teams traded layups before the Eagles tied it up at 28 on a Calvert layup. That started the Eagles' first run of the game, a six-point effort that put Winthrop up four, 32-28 at the 1:02 mark.
WSU's Kelsey Jacobs stopped the run with a layup at the 52-second mark to cut the lead to two, and the two teams traded baskets before Winthrop's Charles set the halftime score at 36-32 with a runner in the lane.
Wichita State improved to 2-3 and Winthrop fell to 2-3.
The Shockers are next in action, 7:05 p.m., Wed., Nov. 30, when Central Michigan visits Charles Koch Arena.
