WICHITA -- Senior cross country athlete Tonya Nero was named the Wichita State University Athlete of the Week for August 30 - September 5 after the Trinidad and Tobago native won the 2010 John "J.K." Kornelson Gold Classic College/University women's 4K on Saturday, Sept. 4.
Nero, who was an all-region and all-conference performer in cross country last season, captured the individual title with a course record time of 13:30.81, almost a full three seconds ahead of the second place competitor. Nero finished in the top-10 in four out of the six races she competed in last season.
The Shockers will take a week off before traveling to Iowa City, Ia., when they take part in the Iowa Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Iowa Invitational is hosted by the University of Iowa.
