Seven 2010 post-season participants and a rising PAC-10 opponent highlight the 2010-11 Wichita State University women's basketball schedule. The Shockers kick off the season Nov. 12 when the University of Arizona visits Charles Koch Arena.
“This program made great strides last season and the caliber of this year's schedule reflects that growth,” said Head Coach Jody Adams. “We are fortunate to be able to open the year against Arizona and to bring a team like that into Charles Koch Arena. Overall, the non-conference games should prepare us well for the MVC schedule. We look to advance this talented young team to the top of the Valley and compete for the championship title.”
The Shockers play 15 of their 29 games at home, including a potentially key match-up against Missouri State on Thursday, Feb. 17. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. to accommodate the regional television broadcast on MVC TV affiliates.
Wichita State will play six of 11 non-conference games at home. Arizona's trip to Koch Arena will be the first meeting between the two schools since 1981 and marks the Wildcats' first-ever visit to Wichita. Arizona is coached by Niya Butts, who won back-to-back national titles with Tennessee in 1997 and 1998. The Wildcats return two-time PAC-10 All-Defensive star Iby Ibekwe and last year's PAC-10 Freshman of the Year, Davelly Whyte.
The remaining non-conference home slate includes a Nov. 20 contest with George Mason of the Colonial Athletic Association and Dec. 2 tilt against Santa Clara from the West Coast Conference. Savannah State, from the MEAC, visits Charles Koch Arena on Dec. 10 for the Shockers' annual Kids Day game.
2010 WNIT participant UC Davis, featuring two-time All-Big West first teamer Paige Minton, comes to Wichita on Dec. 14, then the home non-conference schedule concludes with a Dec. 19 tip-off against Texas-Pan American (Great West Conference), coached by former Fort Hays State assistant Denny Downing.
The road non-conference schedule includes return trips to SIU-Edwardsville on Nov. 16 and South Dakota on Dec. 5.
The Shockers will also participate in the Cal St. – Northridge Thanksgiving Tournament, held Nov. 26 and 27. Wichita State will play the host school on the 26th and then face Chattanooga or Wyoming. Chattanooga won the Southern Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament with a 24-9 record last year. Wyoming also participated in the post-season, earning a WNIT berth following a 21-12 campaign.
The non-conference schedule concludes on Dec. 22 at Central Michigan. The Chippewas will return to Wichita next year.
The Shockers begin Missouri Valley Conference play on New Year's Eve with a 7:05 p.m. tip-off against Evansville. Wichita State then hosts Southern Illinois (Jan. 2), Indiana State (Jan. 13), Illinois State (Jan. 16), reigning MVC Tournament champ Northern Iowa (Feb. 4), Bradley (Feb. 6), Missouri State (Feb. 17), Creighton (Feb. 25), and Drake (Feb. 27).
In total, WSU will play 12 games against opponents that saw post-season action a year ago. The Shockers will face NCAA participant Northern Iowa and could face another in Chattanooga, depending on outcomes from the Cal St. – Northridge Thanksgiving Tournament. Representing teams from the WNIT are Missouri State, Illinois State, Creighton, UC Davis, and, potentially, Wyoming. Bradley, like the Shockers, was invited to the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).
In addition, the Shockers will host one exhibition against Central Oklahoma on Sunday, Nov. 7. The Bronchos are coming off a 22-8 season in which they advanced to the NCAA DII National Tournament.
The State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament will once again be held at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Opening-round games begin Thursday, March 10, 2011 and conclude with the championship game on Sunday, March 13.
Wichita State University is also the host school for First and Second Round games of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament taking place at Intrust Bank Arena in downtown Wichita on Sunday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 22, 2011.
General admission season tickets for women's basketball are currently on sale and reserved season tickets will open up to the public at a later date. For last year's season ticket holders renewals are due on September 20th. Wichita State Athletics is also starting a new program this year called “Shocker Assist,” designed to offer additional savings. If you are a season ticket holder and can find another fan to purchase the same amount and type of season ticket you currently have, WSU Athletics will take 25% off of the costs of your tickets.
