Wichita
State Head Coach Gene Stephenson opening statement:
"I thought Missouri State was a very tough opponent tonight. I thought
that (Missouri State pitcher Mike) Kickham had a high-quality arm on the
mound and was really difficult to handle. I think we were fortunate
enough to rattle him a little bit and were able
to score some runs in the fifth inning and then got the big two-run
homer in the sixth.
Jordan Cooper was outstanding. I don't think he felt
like he had his best stuff or the kind of stuff he had against them the
last time, but this guy can pitch. He's a bulldog
and a great competitor and a great student-athlete, as well."
Sophomore
pitcher Jordan Cooper on his performance:
"I left a lot of pitches over the middle of the plate, but I also have
to credit the Missouri State hitters. They did a good job of taking
advantage of that. They kind of changed their approach from the last
time we faced them, they cut down their swings with
two strikes a little bit and when I made a mistake they took adavantage
of it. You've got to give them credit tonight."
Senior
second baseman Will Baez on getting to Missouri State's Mike Kickham:
"He was kind of mixing it up with his change up and his fastball for the
first couple innings, and it had us all messed up in the head and we
couldn't figure it out. Then in the fourth, he started to leave things
up and we started to take advantage of that
- especially (Bret) Bascue and (Johnny) Coy."
Senior Bret
Bascue on the Shockers' heads-up base running:
"We've always been taught the best time to steal third is after
something big happens. There were passed balls and people scoring, but
when something big happens to make them lose focus for just a second
then we're going to take advantage of that."
Missouri State was under deadline and not available for postgame comments.
