WICHITA - After being forced inside by inclement weather, the Shockers lit up Genesis Health Club by sweeping the doubles point against No. 35 Nebraska before losing momentum in singles play and falling, 5-2.
Wichita State (8-7) came out on fire to burn through doubles play, collecting the doubles point and the edge heading into singles.
"We played doubles the way they're meant to be played today," head coach Brad Louderback said. "That's the way I want to see doubles played."
Shocker junior duo, Adrian Chermaci and Vlad Marinescu smoked Francois Van Impe and Benedikt Lindheim in the No. 2 spot, surrendering just one game en route to their 8-1 victory. Freshman Matheus Pereira and sophomore David Cavalcanti followed their upperclassmen's lead, Andre Stenger and Taylor Boney in the No. 3 match, 8-5.
The freshman combo of Valentin Mihai and Sven Kasper surrendered just one more game in their 8-6 victory against Calin Paar and David Bendheim in an intense No. 1 match, clinching the doubles sweep.
With the momentum on their side, the Shockers headed into doubles play with the 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the home team, the advantage quickly swung back to the nationally-ranked Huskers (12-6) who won five consecutive singles matches in straight sets to claim the victory.
"We played a very good Nebraska team today," Louderback said. "They were hungry to win and they were able to turn it around in singles. I thought we needed to jump out and get some first-set wins and we didn't."
The junior duo who tallied the first win in doubles play were the first two to fall in singles. Chermaci stayed close behind Stenger but couldn't top him in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-3. Marinescu took on Paar in the No. 2 slot, but couldn't shake the German junior, losing 6-2, 6-2 to give the Huskers a lead they would not again surrender.
Mihai battled Husker senior Van Impe, and traded games temporarily before falling behind and eventually losing, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 position. Cavalcanti lost by the same margin to Lindheim at No. 5 to seal the match in Nebraska's favor. Bendheim tacked on the last Husker win by defeating Kasper in a hard-fought No. 1 match, 6-4, 6-4.
Pereira ruined the Huskers' quest for the singles sweep by toppling Eric Sock at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-3.
The Shockers return to the court on Friday when they open Missouri Valley Conference play against the Creighton Blue Jays in Omaha.
