ARLINGTON, Texas - The Shocker softball team remained unbeaten at the UT at Arlington Classic through day two, run-ruling Prairie View A&M on Saturday morning and locking down to win the 1-0 pitching duel against tournament host UTA to wrap up the day.
Game One: Wichita State 11 - Prairie View A&M 0
The Shocker offense hit the ground sprinting on Saturday morning when junior Heather Gerritse's third bomb of the season sparked a four-run first inning. In the Shockers' following at bat, sophomore catcher Holly Eckert drew a walk to leadoff the inning. Two outs later, WSU rallied for another big inning. Base hits for senior second baseman Kara L'Huillier and one of the RBI variety for third baseman Jamie Hull provided the momentum needed to give the Shockers the 7-0 lead.
As the Shocks scored in every inning to pile on the run support, freshman starter Katie Armagost threw a perfect three-inning outing. Armagost (2-1) did not allow allow a batter to reach base, while striking out two. Hull finished the game, allowing a pair of hits and no runs in her two innings of work.
Along with Gerritse's homer, L'Huillier, Hull and senior center fielder Lindsie Mitts paced the Shocker offense with two hits apiece.
Wichita State moves on to play its second game of the day against host team UT at Arlington at 11 am.
Game Two: Wichita State 1 - UT-Arlington 0
Just one outing removed from her best start of the season against UTEP at the Baylor QTI/Getterman Classic, sophomore starter Kasha Kolb lit up the circle again on Saturday afternoon. Kolb (2-3) shut out the Mavericks, took a no-hitter into the sixth and racked up eight strikeouts.
As Kolb sailed through her work against the Maverick lineup, UTA starter Cara Hulme gave the Shocker hitters fits as well. WSU scouted her out for a pair of walks in the bottom of the first but couldn't convert those into runs. Hulme sat the Shocks in order two innings in a row, before Gerritse came through again when she blasted a homer to center. Her third round tripper in as many games handed her team the 1-0 lead that would stand.
Senior center fielder Lindsie Mitts' sharp single to left accounted for the other Shocker hit. Kolb wouldn't need any more than that. Despite allowing a pinch hit single during UTA's final at bat, Kolb coaxed a fly ball out of Heather Fortenberry for the final out.
The Shocks are in action bright and early on Sunday when they take on UTA again Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and wrap up the UT-Arlington Classic against Texas Tech at noon.
