Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State and Tulsa rivalry renewed with fervor Tuesday during a
men's basketball game that remained back-and-forth until the closing minutes in
front of 14,112 fans at INTRUST Bank Arena.
Wichita
State took the lead for good with less than seven minutes remaining and went on to
clinch an 82-79 victory against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes in front of the
largest crowd to ever watch a college basketball game in Wichita.
Garrett
Stutz led the Shockers (9-2) with 20 points, shooting 10-for-12 from the
free-throw line. David Kyles hit five 3-pointers on his way to 19 total points.
Toure' Murry posted a game-high nine rebounds as the Shockers won their fourth
game in a row.
Tulsa's
Justin Hurtt scored a game-high 30 points in the first college basketball game
played at INTRUST Bank Arena, which opened in January 2010. The game also
marked the first played downtown by Wichita State since 1955.
The
two teams combined for 51 3-pointers in the non-conference game.
Kyles
started the game with hot shooting, converting three-straight 3-pointers in the
game's opening two minutes to give Wichita State a quick 9-2 lead. He made his
first five field goal attempts in the game overall, racking up 14 points in the
game's first seven minutes as the Shockers led, 16-12.
A
3-pointer from Tulsa's Hurtt, followed by two free throws from Joe Richard and
a 3-pointer from Tim Peete gave the Golden Hurricanes (5-6) their first lead,
20-16.
A Stutz
layup and 3-pointer from J.T. Durley regained the Shocker edge, 21-20. Three-point
plays from Ben Smith and Stutz put the Shockers ahead, 27-22.
A
dunk from Hurtt tied the game, 28-28, with 6:35 left in the half, but two free
throws from Stutz soon regained the Wichita State lead.
Hurtt's
3-pointer and jumper gave the Conference USA Golden Hurricanes a 37-35 lead
with 2:31 left in the half.
Four
free throws from Murry in the final 90 seconds of the half pushed the Shockers
to a 39-37 edge at halftime.
Fourteen
points from Kyles, who went 5-for-6 from the field, led the Shockers. Murry's
five rebounds paced Wichita State. Bryson Pope's 10 points led Tulsa at
halftime.
The
game remained tight in the opening minutes of the second half.
Back-to-back
3-pointers from Tulsa's Hurtt and Peete gave Tulsa a 54-51 lead until a
three-point play from Stutz with 13:23 left in the game tied the score, 54-54.
A
rebound by Steven Idlet off of a missed Tulsa free throw led to a 3-pointer
from Hurtt, which gave the Golden Hurricanes a 59-54 lead with 12:23 left on
the clock.
A 5-0
run by the Shockers midway through the second half tied the score, 59-59.
A
3-pointer from Graham Hatch, assisted by Durley, brought the crowd to its feet
and tied the game, 64-64, with 8:16 remaining.
A
3-pointer from Hurtt regained the Tulsa edge before Wichita State answered with
an 8-0 run. A Durley free throw, dunk by Aaron Ellis, 3-pointer from Kyles -
his fifth of the game - followed by a jumper from Ellis electrified the crowd
and gave the Shockers a 74-67 lead with 6:04 remaining in the game.
Another
3-pointer from Hurtt - his sixth of the game - cut the Shockers' lead to four
points with just over three minutes remaining. A 3-pointer from Scott Haralson
cut the Shockers' lead to 80-77.
Pope's
layup with 1:19 left cut Wichita State's lead to one point.
Free
throws from Kyles with 24.1 seconds left on the clock boosted the Shockers to
an 82-79 lead. Tulsa shooters missed two 3-point attempts in the closing
seconds to help seal the Wichita State win.
Tuesday's
game renewed the rivalry between Wichita State and Tulsa and marked the first
of a four-game series between the schools that runs through the 2013-14 season.
The two teams last met Dec. 18, 2004 in Tulsa.
The
Shockers open Missouri Valley Conference play with their next game at 7:05 p.m.
Dec. 29 against Evansville at Charles Koch Arena.
