Bulldog Run Dooms Shockers, 68-54

1/9/2010 5:00:00 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa- Drake (10-4, 3-1) used a 15-2 run to start the second half to open up a close game at the half as Wichita State (10-5, 2-2) dropped its second MVC game of the season, 68-54.

Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers with 20 points, marking the third time she reached 20 points this season. Jordan Plummer's 20 points paced the Bulldogs.

The Shockers came out with a strong defensive effort early. Switching from a zone defense to man-to-man, WSU held the Bulldogs to just 2-of-9 shooting early and took a 5-4 lead into the first media timeout. A short jumper from Haleigh Lankster got WSU on the board first while Morgan Boyd's sixth 3-pointer of the season accounted for the offense.

DU took its first lead of the game on a pair of Jordan Plummer free-throws. WSU erased a 10-5 DU lead with good defense and improved shooting. A Lankster steal and jumper capped off an 8-0 Shocker run to give WSU a 13-10 advantage with 10:30 to go in the half.

After taking a two-point lead, DU responded with a 10-2 run capped by a 3-point play by Plummer for a 26-20 lead with 2:33 on the clock. The Bulldogs took a 28-22 lead to the locker room despite holding the Bulldogs to just 32-percent shooting.

Lankster led the Shocker offense in the first half with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting, helping WSU to shoot 43-percent from the field.

Two quick DU baskets gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game, 32-22, and forced a WSU timeout just one minute into the second half. It was the start of a 15-2 run in which the only Shocker basket came after a block by Boyd led to a Sheena Johnson basket.

Turner put an end to a 12-0 Bulldog run with a drive to the basket and layup making the score 44-26 with 15:09 to play. Lankster was the bright spot for the Shockers in the second half. The sophomore scored X of her team-leading XX points in the second half, hitting a 3-pointer and two jumpers. She also had a block that led to a layup in transition by Marisah Henderson.

Michelle Price provided a spark off the bench, scoring a career-high nine points, six of which came in a two minute span.

WSU used a full-court trap to slow down the DU offense in the last five minutes. The change helped WSU cut what was at one point a 25-point Bulldog lead down to 14 and a 68-54 final.

The Shockers shot 43-percent for the game, 44-percent in the second half. The Bulldogs outscored WSU at the free-throw line, 24-9, as the Shockers were whistled for 25 fouls on the day.

WSU returns home to face Indiana State this Thu., Jan. 14 at 7:05 p.m.
