EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Wichita State (12-7, 4-4) took a 10-point lead to halftime but could not survive a second half rally as Evansville (4-15, 1-7) forced overtime and came away with an 83-78 win Thursday night.
Sheena Johnson led the Shockers with a career-high 21 points.
Jazimen Gordon finished with a career-high 15 points and
Chynna Turner had 12 points. The Aces were led by 18 points from Amy Gallagher.
Turner got WSU on the board first with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Dating back to the Jan. 16 game against Illinois State, it was her fifth 3-point basket in as many attempts. A
Michelle Price layup started a 12-2 run that saw the Shocker lead grow to 25-15 with 7:24 to play in the half.
WSU ran the floor well, getting inside shots in transition to fuel the run. Eight of the 12 points scored in the run came inside. Turner scored twice inside and
Dannah Kemp got her second bucket in MVC play on a short jumper while Gordon closed out the run with a pair of free throws.
Johnson led the Shockers with 11 points in the half scoring in a variety of ways. The junior from Clinton, Miss., came within a point of her career-high by penetrating the UE defense, hitting jumpers and connecting from the free-throw line.
WSU went to the break with a 38-28 lead.
Johnson scored first for WSU, giving her a new career-high, but the Aces began to heat up. A jumper by Meagan Collins tied the score at 50 and a layup by Gallagher gave the Aces their first lead of the game, 54-53, with 9:30 to play.
WSU responded with what gave it a lead in the first place. The Shockers used defense to fuel their transition game.
Jessica Diamond's offensive rebound and putback started an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead. Johnson and Boyd scored inside on offensive rebounds and fastbreaks to give WSU a 61-54 lead.
But UE wasn't done either. A pair of free throws sandwiched between two 3-pointers tied the score at 68 with just 39 seconds to play. Each team had a chance at the end of regulation but neither could score, forcing the Shockers to overtime for the second-straight game.
Unlike last week at MSU, the Shockers opened the overtime with sluggish play. The Aces capitalized and stayed hot. Martin hit another 3-pointer and UE scored nine points at the free-throw line to ice the game and take a 83-78 win.
WSU will try to bounce back against Southern Illinois on Sat., Jan. 30 as the Shockers square off with the Salukis at 2:05 p.m.
