Shocks Post Best Start in WSU History, 69-55

1/2/2010 4:00:00 PM

WICHITA -- The Wichita State women's basketball team (10-3, 2-0 MVC) got a career-high 22 points from freshman Jessica Diamond as the Shockers swept the opening weekend of conference play for the first time since 1999 with a 69-55 win over Bradley (4-8, 0-2 MVC) Saturday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State is now off to its best start in school history at 10-3, as the Shockers won their fourth-straight game for the second time this season. Diamond led all scorers, and a career day from freshman Michelle Price helped put the Shockers over the top. The Kingwood, Texas, native posted seven points and nine rebounds in her best effort in a Shocker uniform. Freshman Jazimen Gordon added eight points and five boards while Sheena Johnson added eight more to fuel the Shocker attack.

Sonya Harris led the Braves with 13 points and 11 boards.

In contrast to their start on Thursday, the Shockers came out firing against the Braves, making seven of their first 14 shots but Bradley matched WSU bucket for bucket early on, as neither squad could break out to a sizable advantage.

Things stayed that way through the rest of the first, as the squads battled through foul trouble, eight ties and seven lead changes before five-straight points from Price erased a one point Bradley lead and gave the Shockers a 27-23 advantage with 5:56 left to play in the first.

Bradley responded with a 6-0 run of its own to reclaim a 29-27 edge following a pair of Lauren Niemiera free throws. Momentum then swung back to Wichita State as a Diamond three sparked an 8-0 run by the freshman that gave WSU its biggest lead of the game to that point following her jumper with 1:16 left before the break.

MacKenzie Wescott's three-pointer just before the buzzer snapped WSU's run however, and cut the Shocker lead to 35-32 at the break.

WSU shot 43.3-percent from the floor in the first frame, while the teams combined to shoot 20 free throws in the opening half.

Bradley scored the first four points of the second to take a 36-35 lead, but WSU answered with a Sheena Johnson laying that sparked a back-and-forth run for both squads.

A Harris laying at the 15:35 mark of the second gave the Braves a 39-38 lead, but the Shocks responded with a decisive 17-4 run over the next seven minutes to break out to a 54-42 advantage with eight minutes left to play.

The Braves could never recover as the Shocks extended the lead to as many as 16 down the stretch to post the win.

The Shockers are next in action when they travel to preseason favorite Creighton and Drake next weekend.
