Box Score HOUSTON, Texas - Emily Stockman and
Sarah McGee led the Shockers to a 3-1 win over South Carolina (7-1). No. 23 Wichita State (8-1) won by scores of 25-18, 25-27, 25-20 and 25-19.
Stockman had 19 kills and 16 digs, while McGee added 14 kills and four blocks. Emily Adney had a career-high nine kills, while Mary Elizabeth Hooper totaled 50 assists, five kills, eight digs and three blocks.
The Shockers grabbed an early 8-2 lead in the first set keyed by three WSU blocks and two kills by Sarah McGee. The Gamecocks pulled to within 15-12 after a service ace, but a kill by Mary Elizabeth Hooper increased the lead to 19-13. Back-to-back USC kills cut the advantage to 22-18, but WSU scored three-straight to win 25-18.
WSU hit .323 in the first set, while South Carolina hit just -.029. McGee led the Shocks with four kills and three blocks in the first set, while Hooper had 11 assists and Melissa Granville had seven digs.
USC jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set, but the Shockers were able to cut it to 8-7 on a kill by Emily Stockman. The teams went back-and-forth until a Gamecock kill put USC up 15-12. Two more USC kills increased the lead to 17-12, but a Stockman kill tied the score at 22. The teams traded points until USC scored three-straight to win 27-25.
An ace by Sarah Waldorf put the Shockers up 7-3 in the third set, but USC rallied to pull within 13-11 after a Shocker hitting error. A couple of kills by Katie Niggemeyer gave WSU an 18-13 lead and the Shockers went on to win the set 25-20.
The teams traded points early in the fourth set until back-to-back aces by Waldorf gave WSU an 8-5 lead. A kill by Emily Adney increased the lead to 16-11, but USC scored five-straight to tie it at 16. The Shockers finished the set on a 9-3 run to win 25-19.
The Shockers finish the tournament at 7 p.m. tonight against Rice.
