Wichita State Head Coach Gene Stephenson on the game: “We're down 7-4 in the top of the seventh and JT (hitting coach Jim Thomas) gathered everybody up on the sidelines before we went to bat that inning. He told them ?Look, this game is not over. We can score and do anything'. We did scrap out a couple runs right then and had a chance for a couple more but I think the guys began to believe and once you begin to believe and you get good pitches, things can happen. We obviously had a lot of good at bats in the eighth inning and I'm excited and looking forward to tomorrow.”
WSU third baseman Chris O'Brien on the eight run eighth inning: “After T (hitting coach Jim Thomas) talked to us we all just sat there and thought ?We can do this, it's not over'. Then we all started believing and no one wanted to be that guy to finish the inning. Everyone wanted to keep it going.”
WSU right fielder Ryan Engrav on his 2-RBI single in the eighth: “I got down two strikes and finally got tired of striking out. I started fouling stuff off and protecting the plate and found a slider and took it up the middle like Gene tells us to.”
WSU center fielder Ryan Jones on his night at the plate: “I was just seeing the ball really well tonight. It's always kind of nice to start off with a grand slam, but guys had to get on base for me. They were doing there jobs and I got a pitch I can handle inside. From then on I was just focusing on taking anything back up the middle.”
Stephenson on relief pitcher Remington Johnson: “
Remington Johnson has been an unbelievable find for us. He's done a great job coming in with men in scoring position and getting out of it. Remington was really outstanding.”
Indiana State shortstop Ben Ferrell on the game's momentum swings: “Once the first two guys went on by walks (in the eighth inning) that was kind of a momentum swing right there. With our pitchers not throwing strikes and our defense was loathing, that was the biggest momentum swing right there.”
Indiana State Head Coach Lindsay Meggs' reaction to the loss: “I've got to give them credit. I think we got a little caught up in the environment and we didn't. They took better at bats than we did with people in scoring position and we didn't make pitches. That's not a good recipe when you're playing a good team on their home field.”
Indiana State right fielder Kyle Burnam on getting their bats going early off of WSU starter Tim Kelley: “We already faced him earlier in the year, and he's a guy that's going to be around the plate. Depending on the umpire, if he's going to be around the plate, then you've got to take your hacks.”
Meggs on whether or not the new tournament format will benefit them after a round one loss: “We're not caught up in the format. We could care less about that. For us, it's about taking better at bats tomorrow. We left 13 guys on base. It doesn't matter what the format is or who we play, if we don't take better at bats and make better pitches it just doesn't matter. We can only control that and that's all we're thinking about.”
