Box Score FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Wichita State baseball team (6-5) scored first but a a pair of big innings pushed TCU (9-2) to a 12-3, win and a three game sweep of the Shockers at Lupton Stadium.
WSU was led offensively by
Will Baez, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI on the afternoon. Both
Ryan Jones and
Taylor Brown collected two hits on the day.
The Shocks got on the board early after three-straight hits to lead off the game, including a double by leadoff hitter
Andrew Letourneau that provided the first run of the game after
Will Baez singled to center, driving home Letourneau to give Wichita State a 1-0 lead after its first at bat.
TCU answered in a big way in the bottom of the frame however, scoring five runs on four hits including a three-run home run by first baseman Matt Vern that gave the Horned Frogs a 5-1 lead after one.
WSU put a dent into the TCU lead in the third, after Letourneau reached second on an error before stealing third after
Ryan Jones was walked by Horned Frog starter Kyle Winkler. Baez drove home his second run of the day with a sacrifice fly before a ground ball by Clinton McKeever brought home Jones to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Winkler lasted just 50 pitches, scattering three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. The day wasn't much better for Shocker starter
Jordan Cooper (1-2), who gave up seven runs on eight hits in three innings of work.
TCU had another answer to WSU's rally in the third with two runs on three hits to extend the advantage before a four-run fifth put the game out of reach. The inning started after WSU reliever
Clint Maune hit Vern with a pitch and went to second on an infield single by Bryan Holiday. Corey Steglich then reached on an infield single and went to second on a throwing error that allowed Vern to score. Matt Carpenter brought home Steglich on a sacrifice fly before Chris Ellington put a solo shot over the left-centerfield wall to give TCU an 11-3 lead after five.
The Horned Frogs added another run in the seventh as the Shocker offense could never recover.
Reliever Paul Gerrish (1-0) gave up just two hits in 2.2 innings of work to pick up the win. WSU is next in action when it travels to Kansas at 6 p.m., Wednesday.
