Box Score WICHITA -- Tyler Garewal's two-run home run in the top of the 12th helped Oral Roberts (8-5) outlast the Wichita State baseball team (12-10), 5-3, Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
Cody Lassley went 3-for-5 to lead the Shockers offensively. WSU struck out 21 times as a team on the night.
The Shocks struck first with a run in the second, after
Chris O'Brien led the inning off with a walk following an epic 12-pitch at bat that included six foul balls. O'Brien went to second on a single by
Will Baez and came home on an ORU error that gave Wichita State an early 1-0 lead.
WSU starter
Brian Flynn struck out four of the first seven batters he faced before running into trouble in the third. The Golden Eagles got back-to-back singles before Flynn loaded the bases with one out on a walk. The freshman got out of the jam however, getting his fifth strikeout of the night before Juan Martinez grounded out to end the inning, leaving the bases loaded for ORU.
As good as Flynn was, ORU starter Mark Serrano did his part to steal the show, striking out eight Shockers in a row at one point and tallying 10 through the first four innings.
Cody Lassley made it a 2-0 Shocker lead with one swing of the bat, taking the first pitch of the WSU fifth over the wall in center.
Oral Roberts got on the board in the sixth, getting an RBI single from Michael Notaro to cut WSU's lead in half, 2-1. The run chased Flynn from the game, bringing on
Remington Johnson in relief. Johnson got Kyle Price swinging to end the threat, keeping the Shockers' lead safe after six.
Flynn finished his evening throwing 106 pitches in a season-high 5.2 innings of work, scattering five hits with just one run while striking out nine.
Wichita State turned on the small ball game in the sixth, after
Chris O'Brien's two-out double started a Shocker rally that included three infield singles after
Will Baez reached on a grounder on the left side of the turf that sent O'Brien to third.
Josh Rosecrans brought home WSU's third run of the game with an infield single that scored O'Brien, and Lassley kept the threat alive with a bunt to third to load the bases, but Serrano struck out
Mitch Caster to keep WSU's lead at 3-1 after six.
Serrano finished his night with three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out 13 in six innings of work.
Johnson did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings of work, walking one and striking out three before
Clint Maune came on to work the eighth. Maune issued a leadoff walk to Seth Furmanek and put the tying run on third with a pair of wild pitches before turning the ball over to
Chance Sossamon.
ORU tied the game four pitches later with a two-run shot by Juan Martinez that evened the score, 3-3.
Justin Kemp came on to close out the ORU eighth without any more damage done, giving the Shocks two at bats to regain the lead.
Wichita State missed a golden opportunity to bring home the go ahead run when O'Brien drew a leadoff walk to start the WSU eighth before moving into scoring position by stealing second.
Will Baez gave the Shockers a pair of base runners with nobody out after drawing the second walk of the inning, but Rosecrans grounded into a double play and Lassley went down swinging as the Shockers failed to push a run across.
Kemp retired the side in the ninth, but the Shockers went down in order in the bottom of the frame, sending Wichita State to its first extra inning battle of the season.
The first hits Kemp (0-1) gave up on the night proved to be crucial, as Martinez reached on a two-out single in the 12th and came home after Tyler Garewal's two-run blast gave ORU the 5-3 win.
T.J. Kelly (1-0) picked up the win, giving up just one hit over the final five innings of the game, striking out six.
WSU is next in action on Friday when the Shockers travel to Peoria, Ill., for the first of three games against Bradley this weekend.
