Cooper Shuts Down Waves, 3-1

3/15/2009 4:00:00 PM

Box Score WICHITA -- The Wichita State baseball team (8-7) claimed the series over No. 11 Pepperdine (11-5) with a 3-1 win over the Waves in front of a season-high 3,844 fans on a near perfect Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

Ryan Jones was the only Shocker with two hits on the day, and had the team's only RBI as well. Bryce Mendonca went 2-for-3 with the Waves, while Aaron Gates scored the only run for Pepperdine on the day.

Wichita State got on the board early, just like the second game of the series yesterday, with two runs in the first. Will Baez led the inning off with a single to center before Ryan Jones slapped a 1-0 pitch through the left side that put runners on the corners for WSU with one out.

Clinton McKeever loaded the bases by drawing a walk and both Baez and Jones scored on a throwing error by the Pepperdine first baseman on a ground ball by Chris O'Brien that gave the Shockers the early 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs.

The game then settled into a classic pitcher's duel, with freshman Jordan Cooper and Pepperdine starter Aaron Gates both working quickly through the order and out of jams until the seventh.

That's when Gates helped his own cause by leading off the Waves' seventh with a solo shot to right off Cooper, cutting the WSU lead to 2-1.

WSU answered with a run in the bottom of the frame after Ryan Jones reached on a two-out infield single to score Taylor Brown who led the inning off with a single before stealing second. Jones went to second on the play on another error at first by the Waves but McKeever went down swinging to end the Shocker seventh with a 3-1 lead.

Josh Smith came on in relief of Cooper to start the eighth and retired the side in order, sending the Shockers to the ninth with a lead for the third-straight game in the series.

Colin Rooney led the ninth off with a single before Smith got pinch-hitter Ryan Heroy swinging for the first out of the ninth. Smith then capped off his first career save with a double play that secured the win and the series over the Waves.

Cooper (2-2) had yet another outstanding outing, scattering six hits with just one run with no walks and eight strikeouts in seven full innings of work to pick up the win.

Gates (1-1) gave up just four hits and two unearned runs in five innings of work in the loss.

The Shockers get a day off tomorrow before hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a three-game set that begins with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday followed by a 3 p.m. single game on Wednesday.
