WICHITA, Kan.--Marisah Henderson's second double-double of the season
powered the Shockers over the Salukis, 73-64, to snap a seven-game
losing streak in the opening game of the Shocker's final home stand.
For the second game in a row, the Shockers (11-15, 3-12) saw four double-digit scorers. Senior Marcy Sudbeck and Henderson each led the Shockers with 16 points apiece. Sophomore Val Siemens trailed slightly with 15 while senior Daria Frazier notched 10 points.
The Salukis (8-17, 4-12) were led by senior Erica Smith. The guard led all scorers with a career-high 29 points, 25 of which she scored in the second half.
Despite Smith's best efforts, in the second half the Shockers had an answer for whatever the Salukis threw their way. With just five minutes to play, WSU was shooting a solid 61 percent from the floor and a dominating 75 percent from behind the arc. The Shocks owned the defensive end of the floor, as well, forcing 20 turnovers for 20 points on the evening.
The Shocker guards pushed the offense out to a quick start, as a pair of buckets from freshman Haleigh Lankster put the home ahead early, 8-5. The teams traded baskets as senior forward Jasmine Gibson warmed up. The Salukis' leading scorer knocked down a two shots of her own to take the lead, 9-8.
The rest of the half continued at a back-and-forth scoring pace, with no team taking larger than the Salukis' brief five-point edge. Foul trouble for both teams provided an alternate window for each team to score. The Salukis were in the bonus with more than 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Shockers reached the same advantage less than a minute later.
Not yet at the halfway mark of the opening half, the Shocker defense took its second charge of the evening. WSU responded with a lay up by Sudbeck to tie the game, 16-16. She nailed a turnaround jumper in the lane to give the home team its largest of the half, 20-16.
Back-to-back baskets from Gibson snapped a five-minute Saluki scoring drought and returned the lead, 22-20, with less than four minutes remaining in the half. Although Sudbeck would tie the game for the fifth time with a lay up, Gibson's three-point play ended the half in the Salukis' favor, 27-24.
Both Gibson and Sudbeck led their teams in the first half with 13 points apiece, but it was Smith and Henderson who sparked the start of the second. A Henderson three was combated with three-consecutive lay-ups from Smith to keep the game tight.
WSU's defense responded. Sophomore Jacie Hoyt swiped a Saluki pass and laid it in on the other end of the floor to give the Shocks a slight edge and force a Saluki timeout. Hoyt's steal was the Shockers' eighth of the game on a night they would collect 12.
Not that the Shocker offense wasn't helping their case. Siemens hit back-to-back threes to highlight a 12-0 Shocker run, opening a 42-33 Shocker lead. For the next several minutes, the Shocker offense controlled the game. A short jumper by senior Daria Frazier pushed WSU to a double-digit lead before the midway point of the second half. It was a lead the Shocks would never surrender en route to their 11th victory of the season.
The Shockers will play their last regular season home game on Sunday, Mar. 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
