WSU v Cleveland State--Quotes

WICHITA, Kan.--Coach Gregg Marshall discusses the Shockers' 70-59 victory against Cleveland State on Saturday.

Marshall on the game: “First of all, I have a lot of respect for Coach Waters and Cleveland State. I was fortunate?or unfortunate?enough to watch him build that program at Kent State. I know his teams are really tough, play hard and really defend. I thought we beat a very good basketball team tonight. To do that in the fashion that we did is tremendous for our team and gets us back to .500. So, BracketBusters is ok.”

Marshall on this being a match-up no one wanted, but turning into a great thing: “It's positive now. They went to Syracuse and won. They lost by 10 to K-State. They lost to Washington, another top 25 team. I watched four game films and I was very anxious about the game. I think they do a really good job. We had a lot of guys play well tonight. I thought A.J. Hawkins in particular did a wonderful on (Cleveland State guard) Cedric Jackson.  He does a tremendous job and really likes to drive it, and A.J. had to guard him most of the night. I thought he did a great job. He rebounded well tonight and played with a lot of energy and emotion. Toure' Murry shooting the ball in the second half was just tremendous. David Kyles hit his from three, so our freshmen were 7-of-8 from the three. If throw Stutz's in there, they were 8-of-9. We just had a lot of good performances. All five starters were in double figures.”

Marshall on the team starting to be the team he envisioned it could be: “I didn't really know what to expect with so many new players. At that point, we had 10 new players and then we added Johnny Coy so now we have 11 new players. They looked good tonight. They're getting there. They are certainly not a finished product, but they're better than they were a couple of weeks ago and better than they were a couple of months ago.”

Marshall on this being the type of win that could give his team a boost:  “I hope so. I don't think we need any motivation to get back into conference play against Indiana State on Tuesday night with everything at stake. I thought the guys did a really good job. Coach (Marty) Gross breaking the film down and getting the guys prepared. The guys really followed the game plan beautifully.”
