Box Score WICHITA, Kan. ? No. 22 Wichita State continues to move
through its season undefeated, as the Shockers' record improved to 7-0 after
sweeping the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in day two of the Best Western
Volleyball Classic's primetime match: 25-19, 25-18 and 25-16.
Emily Stockman served the Shockers to a 7-4 lead in the
first set, but the Chanticleers rallied to within 16-13 after a kill by Amanda
Russell. A kill by Angela Jakubov put
the Shocks up 21-16, but again Coastal Carolina was able to cut the deficit,
this time to 21-18 after a Shocker hitting error. WSU responded by ending the set on a 4-1 run
to take a 25-19 win. Stockman totaled
seven kills in the set, while Jakubov added four. The Shockers also played stellar defense in
the frame totaling 25 digs, eight by Kelly Broussard.
The second set started as a back-and-forth battle until the
Shockers grabbed a 13-8 advantage after a couple of Chanticleer miscues. An ace by Lindsey Eckenrode increased the
lead to 20-14 and the Shockers closed out the set by winning 25-18 after a
Coastal hitting error. WSU tallied 14
kills in the set and hit .333, while limiting the Chanticleers to nine kills
and a .103 hitting percentage. Stockman,
Jakubov and Sarah McGee each had four kills in the set for WSU.
Another Jakubov kill put the Shocks up 10-6 in the third
set, but the Chanticleers hung around pulling to within 15-11 after a
kill. WSU then reeled off a 10-5 run to
take the set 25-16.
Stockman finished the night with a team-leading 15 kills.
Jakubov stayed on her heels with 10 kills and a convincing .429 hitting
percentage.
The Shockers are next in action on Saturday against Ohio
State at 8 p.m.
