WICHITA, Kan. ?  Freshman standout setter Mary Elizabeth Hooper led the Shockers to a 3-0 sweep over the Bengals of Idaho State University in day two's opening match of the Best Western Volleyball Classic. Wichita State took the match 25-15, 25-16 and 25-13.

Hooper collected 28 assists in the morning contest and tallied four kills, good for a .500 hitting percentage. Junior Emily Stockman led the Shockers with nine kills, while connecting for three aces.

On the defensive front, senior Kelly Broussard shut down the Bengals' offensive effort with 17 digs. Wichita State hit .253 as a team, and kept Idaho State from fairing as well with a -.027 average.

The Shockers jumped out to a quick 5-1, lead in set one, but continued to fight off a rallying Bengal squad. The Bengals closed the gap to 15-13 before the Shockers shut the door en route to a 25-15 victory.

Idaho State took a 3-1 lead to open set two, but would not enjoy another lead of that margin for the remainder of the match as Wichita State walked away with set two, 25-16.

The Shockers offense stayed hot through the deciding set, but the defensive effort took over. Wichita State forced 12 Idaho State attack errors before sealing the match with a 25-13 victory.

The Shockers are next in action at 8 p.m. on Friday night against Coastal Carolina.
