standout setter Mary Elizabeth Hooper led the Shockers to a 3-0 sweep over the
Bengals of Idaho State University in day two's opening match of the Best
Western Volleyball Classic. Wichita State took the match 25-15, 25-16 and
25-13.
Hooper collected 28 assists in the morning contest and
tallied four kills, good for a .500 hitting percentage. Junior Emily Stockman
led the Shockers with nine kills, while connecting for three aces.
On the defensive front, senior Kelly Broussard shut down the
Bengals' offensive effort with 17 digs. Wichita State hit .253 as a team, and
kept Idaho State from fairing as well with a -.027 average.
The Shockers jumped out to a quick 5-1, lead in set one, but
continued to fight off a rallying Bengal squad. The Bengals closed the gap to
15-13 before the Shockers shut the door en route to a 25-15 victory.
Idaho State took a 3-1 lead to open set two, but would not enjoy
another lead of that margin for the remainder of the match as Wichita State walked
away with set two, 25-16.
The Shockers offense stayed hot through the deciding set,
but the defensive effort took over. Wichita State forced 12 Idaho State attack
errors before sealing the match with a 25-13 victory.
The Shockers are next in action at 8 p.m. on Friday night
against Coastal Carolina.
