Shocks Open Tournament with 3-0 Win

Box Score WICHITA -- The No. 22-ranked Wichita State volleyball team improved to 5-0 on the season as the Shockers swept Lamar (1-2), 3-0, Thursday evening to complete first day action at the 2008 Best Western Classic inside Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers won by scores of 25-9, 25-20 and 25-15. WSU hit better than .400 in sets one and three, but both squads struggled in the second frame, as WSU outhit the Cardinals -.031 to -.178. WSU finished with a .274 percentage on the night while Lamar hit -.048.

WSU was led by Lindsey Eckenrode and Sarah McGee, who had 10 kills each. Shalayne Blythe led Lamar with six kills. Mary Elizabeth Hooper led all players with 29 assists while Kelly Broussard posted a match-best 11 digs.

The Shockers raced out to a 13-3 lead in set one following a Jakubov kill, and stretched the advantage to as many as 22-7 before finishing off the Cardinals on an Eckenrode kill to win the first set.

Both teams were sluggish in the second set, struggling to score offensively after the Shockers led out to a 6-1 lead early, thanks to five Lamar errors. The squads traded points until a pair of Cardinals' errors gave WSU a 21-19 lead late, forcing Lamar to use a timeout.

WSU took a 23-19 lead following another Lamar error and finished the second set off on two more Cardinals miscues to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The Shockers came out firing once again in the third set, running out to a 7-2 lead before a Genevieve Gladle kill capped a 5-1 run by Lamar to move within 9-7. WSU answered with an 8-0 run of its own, fueled by a pair of McGee kills to hold grab a 17-8 lead and control of the match.

WSU finished off the Cardinals after a timeout, getting a kill from Eckenrode and a Lamar error to complete the sweep.
