EUGENE, Ore. - Wichita State will be well represented at the second session of the U.S. Olympic Trials, set to begin Thursday, July 3 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

The Shocker track and field contingent at the Trials includes WSU throws coach John Hetzendorf and sophomore Brett Trudo in the javelin, and WSU graduate assistant coach Chandra Andrews in the hammer throw.

Andrews will be the first to compete with the qualifying round of the hammer throw at 9 p.m. CDT on Thursday, July 3rd. Hetzendorf and Trudo will throw in the javelin qualifying on Friday, July 4th at 7:30 p.m. CDT.

Hetzendorf, a two-time All-American during his college career at Kent State, is among the elite javelin throwers in the nation. He enters the competition ranked 10th in the deep field with a mark of 251-5. In 2008, Hetzendorf started with a victory at the Sacramento State Nike ELITE Invitational with a throw of 223-8. He then placed third at the Kansas Relays (246-8) and second at the Oregon Relays (241-3). His season best throw of 251-5 came in a third-place finish at the Tucson Elite Throwers Classic.

In 2007, he placed fourth with a toss of 243-8 at the USATF Championships. Hetzendorf had his best career throw of 256-8 when he placed second at the 2005 USATF Championships. He also qualified for the Olympic Trials in 2004, placing ninth in the javelin, and was a team member at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland in 2006.

Also in the men's javelin competition is Shocker sophomore Brett Trudo. During his freshman campaign this spring, Trudo made his mark in WSU history, breaking the school record by nearly eight feet, with a toss of 237-7. He finished 15th in the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships, but prior to nationals, Trudo earned all-conference and all-region honors, placing third at both events. At the MVC Championships, he came through on his last throw of the final round with a mark of 220-8. Two weeks later, he finished in the bronze position at the Midwest Regional Championships with a throw of 226-11.

In the women's competition at the trials, former Shocker standout Chandra Andrews will take her chance at the Olympic team in the hammer throw. She completed a successful career at WSU in 2007 with a berth to the national meet after winning the Midwest Regional Championship in the hammer throw with a mark of 200-4. During 2008, Andrews has placed in the top four in each of her five events. At the Ward Haylett KSU Invitational, Andrews smashed her personal best unleashing a toss of 209-0 to place second. She also won the KT Woodman title in the hammer throw earlier in the season with a toss of 188-6.
