Box Score WICHITA, Kan.-Wichita State's Rob Musgrave threw a complete game and came away with a 6-1 victory over Northern Iowa.
The senior left-hander held the Panthers to five hits and one earned run with one walk and 12 strikeouts.
Offense wasn't lacking either, as the Shockers combined for nine hits and drew a total of eight walks.
A lead off walk to Josh Workman in the first became costly as back-to-back singles by Andy Dirks and Dusty Coleman plated the run.
The Shockers struck again in the bottom of the third with two outs. Dirks doubled to the gap in right-center field and advanced to third on a high pick off move by starting pitcher Guido Fonseca. Coleman drew a walk and a passed ball during a Clint McKeever at bat scored Dirks.
A solo shot by Kenny Williams, Jr., made it 3-0, in the sixth again on two outs.
Brett Douglas singled to start the seventh and rounded to third on a hit by Travis Hendrix. Musgrave loaded the bases by hitting Eddie Almonte with no outs. A double play scored Douglas, but put two down. Musgrave finished up the inning with a strikeout of lead off hitter Deric Manrique.
A homerun in the bottom half, this time a two-run dinger by Tyler Weber. Ryan Engrav drew a two-out walk to get on board before Weber's third homer of the year.
Wichita State's final run came in the eighth after a double to right field by Workman. The runner moved up on a fly ball from Ryan Jones and scored on a sacrifice fly by Coleman.
Workman led the Shockers, going 3-for-4 with two runs, in his second game since pulling a side muscle on April 8. The Panthers' hits came from five individual players.
The conference series continues Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., in Wichita.
