WICHITA -- The Wichita State softball team (30-24, 12-11) picked up its 30th win of the season with a senior led performance as the Shockers turned back UNI (19-25, 4-14), 5-2, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Wilkins Stadium.
Wichita State's seniors, honored prior to the game, led the charge for the Shockers in their final game at Wilkins Stadium, driving in three of WSU's five runs on the day. Seniors
Britnee Barnett and
Cynthia Verhulst both homered, while
Christina Rios was active in the outfield, logging three putouts in right for the Shockers on the afternoon. Senior
Ashly Bright picked up the win for the Shockers in the circle, moving to 19-15 on the season, while
Katie McGeeney went 2-for-3 at the plate as the leadoff hitter in the WSU batting order.
McGeeney led the Shocker first off with a walk and later came around to score on a bloop single by freshman catcher
Heather Gerritse after advancing to third on a single by Verhulst earlier in the inning. Gerritse's 23rd RBI of the season gave the Shockers a 1-0 lead. Jamie Stanclift's two-out single to left plated WSU's second run of the day, giving the Shockers a 2-0 edge in their first at bat.
Senior
Britnee Barnett crushed the first pitch of the third from UNI starter Jen Larsen (6-12) over the left field fence, extending the Shocker lead to 3-0 after her fifth home run of the season.
Verhulst added to the Shocker lead in the fifth with a two-run home run deep over the center field fence, the 29th of her career, giving WSU a 5-0 lead after McGeeney led the inning of with a single.
UNI rallied in the seventh with two outs, as Kelly Papesh ripped a two-run home run to spoil
Ashly Bright's bid for a shutout in her final game at Wilkins Stadium. Bright gave up two runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts on the day. Larsen finished with five earned runs on 10 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
WSU concludes its regular-season next week when the Shockers travel to Tulsa on Wednesday for a makeup doubleheader with the Golden Hurricane before finishing at Drake next weekend.
