Tennis Seeks MVC Championship in Omaha This Weekend

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Wichita State tennis squads look to put the finishing touches on a winning season this weekend when they compete at the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Omaha, Neb. WSU's women are searching for their third-straight Valley championship, while the men are searching for their first Valley championship since 2004.

The Shocker women will have the target on their backs. Ranked 72nd in the nation and the two-time champion of the event, the Shockers join 75th-ranked Indiana State as the only ranked teams in the field. WSU (14-7, 7-1) is the #2 seed in the tournament, and will open play Friday with a 12:30 p.m. match against seventh-seeded Evansville (12-11, 2-6), who the Shockers defeated 7-0 earlier this season.

The Shocker men, meanwhile, are looking for an opportunity to avenge last week's disappointing 4-2 loss to undefeated and 50th-ranked Drake in the potential Valley Championship match. Wichita State (17-4, 5-1) is the #2 seed in this year's Valley tournament, and will open play with Friday's 3 p.m. match against seventh-seeded Bradley (2-17, 0-6).

The tournament is scheduled to be played at Omaha's Koch Family Tennis Center. In the event of inclement weather, the tournament will be moved indoors to the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center. Results from each round, along with a complete recap of each match, will be posted on goshockers.com as they become available.
